Sound City, Dave Grohl's love letter to the golden age of recording studios, plays very differently as an album than it does a documentary. it's not quite as off its rocker as early PJO, which is maybe part of why it took a little longer for me to really feel invested (PJO had the same "percy has no idea what's going on and that makes it hard to parse" stuff, but it also had percy killing his math teacher with a sword and then being told he drools while he sleeps and shit like that), but I'm really enjoying it now that the story's gotten moving properly the gods work differently, magic works differently, but you can still see the same framework the same notes about how egyptian culture has translated to the modern day, how egyptian culture was the first spark of "the west" in the eay that PJO (and sequels) talks about the spirit of western civilization as connected to the greek/roman gods. it's fun both in and of itself- carter and sadie are both charming and annoying in their own ways, which makes for compelling reading, and I always love me a good sibling relationship I also think the rules of magic that have been set up are pretty fun- but it's also really interesting to look at it in conversation with percy jackson and the overall world riordan has built. the red pyramid has taken a little while to get moving, but I'm about halfway through and really enjoying it now. Black Sails constantly pokes fun at its source material, and one of the best ways it does that is by constantly reminding us that Billy is an absolutely unreliable narrator at best.įinally getting around to continuing my rick riordan reading marathon, this time with the kane chronicles, which I've never read before. I actually really love that Billy is just completely off his rocker in seasons 3 and 4 because it puts into stark relief that stories aren’t true just because you tell them, and they don’t become true just because you believe them to be so.
